Who We Are

Vertige Media is an independent climbing outlet that treats climbing as a social, cultural, and political phenomenon. You won’t find competition results, rankings, or performance churn here. What you will find: reported stories, deep analysis, and investigative work on what climbing means—and on the forces shaping the sport behind the scenes.

We publish five to seven pieces every week on our site.
And our weekly newsletter, sent every Wednesday, delivers the editor’s note, our best reads, and a few surprises—so you don’t miss what matters.

Rethinking Climbing

Climbing is booming. The numbers are up, the industry is growing, the culture is expanding—and that kind of momentum always comes with consequences. Yet most climbing coverage still treats the sport like a scoreboard: grades, sends, podiums.

We think it’s time for a wider lens.

Our mission is to help you think your climbing—to look at what the practice reveals about our collective desires, our contradictions, and the world we’re building. We stand for a form of climbing that’s open to everyone—regardless of gender, disability, or background—rooted in respect for the places we climb, and not reduced to pure market logic.

Engaged, Irreverent, and Uncompromising

Vertige Media exists to spark questions, conversation, and perspective.

Our approach: independent journalism that helps you step back and see the bigger picture.
Our goal: raise the bar by covering climbing as a crossroads of social, economic, environmental, and political issues.
Our ambition: tell the best stories in climbing—human, sharp, and occasionally funny (because we’re alive).

A Media Outlet That Holds Nothing Back

For us, climbing is a vertical mirror held up to society. We write about gender, ecology, pleasure, doubt, power—about life, through the lens of climbing.

To protect our independence, we rely on reader support through donations. We also work selectively with partners within the climbing world; any sponsored content is clearly labeled.

Pierre-Gaël Pasquiou

Co-founder and Publishing Director

A former sales manager, his blood is as hot as a south face and his calves are as shapely as an overhang. He's never been injured since he's been eating the wall five times a week for the past three years. This suggests either a certain tenacity or doping. The investigation is ongoing.

Matthieu Amaré

Co-founder and Editor-in-Chief

A former editorial director, he's making his return to a free and independent media outlet. Enough to boost his 9c+ ego, which plummets quickly when it comes to lead climbing and rises sharply when it comes to validating an article title.

Marion Reymund

Journalist

Trained in animation, Marion took a hard left into journalism to gain some altitude. From up there, she now rains down sharp, funny, and highly watchable multimedia pieces across Vertige Media. A career ascent, in the most literal sense.

Ysaline

Illustrator

With an animation background rooted in film, Ysaline redraws climbing as a parallel universe—hers. And her universe is a kaleidoscope: tender, electric, and, above all, genuinely hilarious.

Piet

Press Cartoonist

A journalist, cartoonist, and translator, he lives in Strasbourg on the French-German border. With a perfectly balanced, dynamic perspective, he captures the world of climbing he encounters every day in the gym. A world as merciless as his drawings.
